EAMO, the Early Awareness/Multicultural Outreach program of MSFAA. The primary focus of EAMO is to reach out to students of all ages and assist in preparing them for post-secondary education.
The most recent EAMO event held this spring was at Kalamazoo Central High School, Kalamazoo, Michigan. In the past few years EAMO programs have been conducted at Detroit International Academy, Detroit, Michigan, Hamady High School in Flint, Michigan, Pontiac Northern and Pontiac Central in Pontiac, Michigan and many other schools throughout the state. EAMO has been providing the successful Lessons In Dollars (L.I.D) and Get Real Early Awareness Lessons (Get R.E.A.L) programs for over 10 years. Schools selected to participate have had a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced lunch. Statistics show these areas have a high percentage of first-generation college students.
At Kalamazoo Central a total of 67 students participated. Part of the program requires students to submit an essay to be considered for a scholarship to be used to assist in their cost of attending college. There were a total of 45 essays submitted this year. Nine scholarships were awarded (6 - $500, 1 - $750, 2 - $1,000). Scholarships are awarded based upon a student’s essay, attendance, homework submitted and overall participation throughout the 6 week program.
Since 2004 there has been a total of $23,850 awarded to future college students. The amount of the scholarship varies each year depending on the number of students that choose to submit an essay. Annual scholarship totals have ranged from $2,000 to $6,250 in the past 6 years with individual awards ranging from $125 - $1200. Along with scholarships, students have earned gift certificates to bookstores just for submitting their essays. No student leaves an EAMO event empty handed! This has been made possible with donations from institutions associated with MSFAA. Donations have varied from key-chains, mugs, t-shirts to backpacks. Volunteers for this program are individuals associated with MSFAA and are committed to the early awareness of our students.
MSFAA is proud to offer the EAMO program throughout Michigan, as MSFAA members know, the more we can help to educate, the better our families, communities and state will be!
